eScription Reduces Radiology Turnaround Time to Under 30 Minutes Using Computer Aided Medical Transcription

April 24, 2006 (Boston, MA) - eScription, Inc., the leader in Computer Aided Medical Transcription (CA-MT) software, announced today that its EditScript solution is helping health care organizations achieve turnaround times of less than 30 minutes for radiology transcription. EditScript uses its own intelligent, background speech recognition engine to turn radiologists' dictations into formatted first draft documents that medical transcriptionists (MTs) quickly review and edit. Unlike real-time speech recognition technology that requires clinicians to "train" their own systems, and then review and edit draft reports themselves, the eScription approach imposes little to no change on clinicians.

"The benefit of this product is that it has been able to dramatically improve our report turnaround times to within 30 minutes without impacting the radiologists' efficiency," stated Dr. James Mastromatteo, Chief of Radiology at Faulkner Hospital, the community hospital partner of Brigham and Women's Hospital and a member of Partners HealthCare Inc. in Boston. "We can now give faster service to our ordering physicians at lower transcription costs, without adding new burdens to the radiologists. The eScription approach has been very effective both for our department and the entire Faulkner Hospital organization."

"Using EditScript, the turnaround time for our emergency and priority radiology dictations is now between 20 and 30 minutes, which is a significant improvement over our previous system," stated Dr. Herbert Kressel, Chief of Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "We have found that EditScript works very well from the clinicians' perspective."

"Like many others, we were people-dependent," adds Stuart Hooton, Administrative Director for the Radiology Department at Faulkner Hospital. "If our medical transcriptionists were out sick, or not available, reports backed up. Not only have we improved our turnaround time from more than 55 hours to 20 minutes, but we have also reduced transcription costs by at least 33% since changing to the EditScript solution approximately seven months ago."

The rapid turnaround times result in part from the unique speech recognition engine developed by eScription, which both turns clinicians' spoken words into text and formats the draft documents, thereby requiring very few edits by MTs. In addition, the product includes advanced features that streamline workflow ensuring that the MTs quickly receive the drafts to review and edit.

"Many healthcare organizations prefer an enterprise-wide solution but are concerned about the special needs in Radiology," stated Ben Chigier, CEO of eScription. "EditScript provides a viable speech recognition alternative to radiology departments that want to achieve their required turnaround times without forcing clinicians to do their own editing."
