Speech Recognition at Maine Medical Center: From Pilot Site to Million Dollar Savings

John Avedian, Maine Medical Center
John Avedian, MPH, RHIA, is Director, Health Information Management at Maine Medical Center a 606-bed facility in Portland, Maine. As HIM Director for the past eleven years, John is responsible for all aspects of the department including management of 96 staff members in 24x7 operation including budget development, and strategic planning.

Under John's direction, Maine Medical Center was one of the first healthcare organizations to implement the EditScript solution. The MMC Team was instrumental in the development of the product as it is known today. In 2005, MMC was awarded membership to the eScription Million Dollar Club for demonstrating that amount of savings by using Computer Aided Medical Transcription.

John has been working in the HIM profession for over 20 years and has had several management positions in New Jersey and New York prior to becoming the Director at Maine Medical Center. He has served as the Executive Sponsor for the Document Imaging and Management System which serves as a cornerstone of MMC's electronic health record. In addition, he has served as the leader for the JCAHO Information Management Team and the Clinical Documentation Management Program as well as the Institution's Privacy Officer.

Maurya Meenan
Maurya oversees the eScription Installation Group, which is responsible for implementing eScription products for new and existing customers, and for providing account management services to customers who have completed the implementation process. Maurya has an extensive background in health care information technology. Prior to joining eScription, Maurya was with IDX for 19 years, where her responsibilities included management of technical installation and support staff, project management, and implementation process redesign. She has a B.A. from Princeton University.
