UNC Health Care Saves Over $1 Million with Computer Aided Medical
Transcription Solution from eScription
September 27, 2004 (Boston, MA) - eScription, Inc., the leader
in Computer Aided Medical Transcription (CA-MT) software announced
today that its EditScript solution is saving
UNC Health Care, more than $1 million dollars in the cost of medical transcription.
Installed one year ago, EditScript is currently being used
organization-wide both in the 688-bed facility of the University of North
Carolina Hospitals, and in its network of primary care and specialty
physician practices. In addition to delivering savings of more than 38% in
medical transcription costs, the EditScript solution has successfully
reduced overall transcription turnaround time (TAT) to less than 12 hours
for this leading health care organization.
The EditScript solution from eScription, which received the #1 ranking in
the Dictation, Transcription & Speech Recognition category of this
year's
KLAS Top 20 Midyear Report (see release dated June 25, 2004 and
www.healthcomputing.com), is based on the simple premise that it is faster
to edit than to type. Clinicians dictate as usual, but instead of having
their dictations typed from scratch, EditScript uses powerful speech
processing technology to create accurate and fully formatted first drafts
that MTs quickly review and edit, often doubling productivity.
UNC Health Care, a leader in the electronic medical record (EMR), wanted
to ensure that any new transcription technology could be fully integrated
with its comprehensive Clinical Data Repository. "UNC has a strong
foundation in the electronic medical record, including a system that has
been in place and evolving for more than 14 years," stated James Walsh,
Director, Application Development, Financial and Administrative Systems.
"The advantage of the eScription solution is that it enabled us to lower
transcription costs by more than 38% across the board, while integrating
with our existing EMR infrastructure."
Today, more than 23 million lines of transcription per year dictated by more
than 1,300 clinicians at UNC Health Care are being processed through the
EditScript solution. Clinicians have benefited from the reduced TAT that
the new system delivers. "Our clinicians have been astonished by the rapid
results. Most of the time, we are lower than the contracted TAT,"
commented
Anne Hopper, Medical Information Systems Manager.
Delivering a straightforward integration, EditScript uses an HL7 industry
standard interface to integrate with the centralized data repository at
UNC Health Care. Further, on the dictation side, eScription set up the
voice capture component so that it mimicked the keypad interface with
which UNC clinicians were familiar. "From the clinician perspective, the
transition has been practically invisible," Ms. Hopper continued. "They
didnt need any training, and they continue to do what they normally do
from day to day."
At the heart of EditScript, CA-MT software focuses on converting medical
dictations to text, interpreting and formatting the draft records, and
providing an efficient editing interface for MTs. The speech processor
uses models developed solely from the medical transcription environment,
and employs techniques that take much more contextual information into
account than is possible with real-time technologies. Further, the
technology formats the draft reports in the style set up by each health
care organization.
"We were attracted by eScriptions centralized voice recognition engine
approach, which provides high quality output and does not require us to
manage and 'train' multiple PC-based systems," said Jim Walsh. "Within two
months of installation we had over 60% of our total dictation being
recognized. We do not believe we could achieve that in the first 24 months
with any of the other solutions we looked at. More importantly for us, the
percentage of our total volume that is being recognized continues to
increase."
"UNC has a strong IS team and a well organized HIM department with very
high standards. We worked closely with them to integrate the EditScript
solution into their sophisticated infrastructure," stated Ben Chigier, CEO
of eScription. "The operational outcomes of improved management, decreased
turn around time, and cost savings typify the results of our product and
service offerings across the country. We are delighted to deliver on UNC
Health Cares goals."
